BARBARA RICKāS SHE SAYS/ WOMEN IN NEWS COMES ĪOUT OF THE BLUEā TO WIN 2002 NATIONAL EMMY

New York, September 16, 2002 - In a surprise victory, the indie film SHE SAYS/ WOMEN IN NEWS won out over network and cable entries from CBS, CNN, and Court TV at National Emmy ceremonies held at the Marriott Marquis on September 10th. The award for "Outstanding Informational Programming (Long Form)" was presented to Barbara Rick, President and Founder of Out of The Blue Films, Inc.

The documentary exploring women's impact on American journalism, aired nationally on PBS in December 2001. First-time national Emmy winner Rick directed, produced, and co-wrote the program, which received major funding from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, The Whitehead Foundation, and The Ford Foundation. Joan Konner, former dean of the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, served as executive producer of the project.

"The award is not just a triumph for us," stated Ms. Rick, "but a validation of the important work done by independent filmmakers worldwide."

Ms. Rick's early films include To Bear Witness, a WNBC-TV portrait of the first world gathering of Jewish holocaust survivors, and Asylum In The Streets, a highly-rated documentary examining New York City's mentally ill homeless crisis, for which she won a Peabody Award.

A journalist/filmmaker with more than twenty years experience in television news and documentary, Ms. Rick is also the recipient of numerous other awards, including two New York area Emmys.

Ms. Rick is currently collaborating with legendary filmmaker Albert Maysles on the documentary In Good Conscience: Sister Jeannine Gramick's Journey of Faith. The film chronicles an American nun's battle with the Vatican over her ministry to gay and lesbian Catholics. Ms. Rick is also seeking distribution for her recently completed film Sounds Sacred, which explores how humans connect with the spiritual through the tool of sound.

Out of The Blue Films, Inc., based in New York City, was founded in 1998 to create critically and commercially successful films that explore, articulate, and celebrate humanity.
