SOUNDS SACRED is an exploration of the unique and powerful ways human beings connect with the spiritual through the use of sound. This visual essay reflects on how ordinary people around the world unite with something greater than themselves through distinct practices of voice, rhythm, and ritual. Viewers from all religious and ethnic backgrounds will benefit from SOUNDS SACREDwhich honors the sanctity of separate cultures while demonstrating how sound acts as a mirror, harmonizer, and equalizer.
Viewers witness an extraordinary journey: the rare chanting rituals of Benedictine nuns in New England, the sounding of six-foot horns by Moroccans at ancient ruins, whirling dervishes of Turkey, Native American flute against an urban backdrop, Javanese gamelan players, Hindu ragas, sacred songs of Iraq, and rich original American Gospel music. Intense Buddhist incantations as well as the deep resonance of an American gongmaster and a female cantor are also experienced. As the exclusive American production team at the World Sacred Music Festival in Fez, Morocco, Out of The Blue Films, Inc. brings the curious to an amazing fusion of sound and ritual in North Africa. Interviews with the soundmakers and best-selling author Deepak Chopra speak to the immense power of sacred sound and its profound relevance to the spiritual. Mother Dolores Hart, a well-known actress who left Hollywood for the life of a nun in the early 60's, speaks about her connection to sound and spirit in a rare interview.
Through interviews and performances, these images and characters are woven together to create a compelling odyssey into the power of sound: a power dissolving deep cultural differences, breeding unity and harmony. SOUNDS SACRED nourishes the vast emerging hunger for programs on spirituality by giving its audience a soulful and memorable experience.
OFFICIAL SELECTION OF THE MILL VALLEY FILM FESTIVAL
OCTOBER 14, 2001
Sounds Sacred is an exceptional essay on the way sound makes the spirit soar, creates common ground between cultures and connects us to higher levels of consciousness. As one musician puts it, sound is "food that goes in the ear that feeds the soul." Notable among this film's delights are beautifully rendered footage of whirling dervishes, appearances by San Francisco's Glide Memorial Church Choir and an interview with a nun who reveals her pre-monastic rock 'n' roll background. Interwoven into this aural and visual odyssey is commentary by author Deepak Chopra, who speaks authoritatively on the relevance of the acoustic to the spirit, giving a historical context to this soulful homage to the ecstacy and mystery of sound. -2001 MVFF Brochure
What a wonder to see and hear people singing with their voices and bodies, playing natural and rough-made instruments, moving in assorted expressive waysÑall to connect with the very root of their being and the world at large! There is no better way to be than to make music and sounds. This intelligent and colorful film teaches that any sound can be sacred, that the natural world expresses itself in sound, and that the spiritual and the sensuous are one." -Tom Moore, author of "The Soul's Religion"
